Housing and Tenant Organizing

Preserving Affordable Housing: CGA has developed over 500 units of affordable housing and currently maintains 150 affordable rental units with nearly 375 low-income residents. CGA’s affordable housing units are located in the Carroll Gardens, Columbia Waterfront, and Red Hook neighborhoods. As the biggest affordable housing provider in Red Hook outside NYCHA, CGA continues to plan new affordable housing in the neighborhood. CGA’s expanded mission allows the organization to plan and develop affordable housing where opportunities are available.

The Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union: Formed in response to increasing displacement and access to affordable housing, SWBTU works with members by connecting them with legal counseling, emotional support, organizing and direct action, media and political education, and mutual aid. The Union supports individual members fighting to remain in their homes while organizing collectively with allies including elected officials and community based organizations, for broader policy that will ensure the right to housing for ALL residents.

Immigrant Worker Justice

Worker Cooperative Development: CGA provides technical assistance to Hopewell Care, a childcare cooperative owned and operated by 15 immigrant women that CGA helped found in 2016. In partnership with the Center for Family Life we are currently supporting the launch of Brightly Carroll Gardens, a residential and office cleaning worker cooperative.

Carroll Gardens Nanny Association: A nanny led membership organization that provides legal support, workforce training, and leadership development opportunities while organizing collectively to raise standards in the domestic work industry.

Fair Care Brooklyn: A group of domestic employers and allies who strive to ensure that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and employers have access to the information and support they need. We serve as a resource for neighbors who are or want to become domestic employers by sharing best practices and resources through workshops, forums, and kitchen table conversations.

Workforce Development

We Rise Nanny Training: In partnership with the National Domestic Workers Alliance and Cornell University, the training equips leaders to facilitate workshops such as child nutrition, communication with families, home as a workplace, among other topics. We offer the training four times a year in Spanish and English.

Computer Training: Free weekly computer classes in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Powerpoint.
