NYCEDC is hosting a series of collaborative workshops in 2010 to develop a vision for improving the BQE Enhancement study area. At the first workshop in May, designers solicited advice, input, and local experience for this section of the BQE. At the second workshop in July, designers will present initial conceptual plans and gather feedback. Designers will present finalized conceptual alternatives at the final workshop this fall. The second BQE Community Planning Workshop will be held on July 20, 2010 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Long Island College Hospital, Avram Conference Center, Rooms A & B located at 339 Hicks Street, Brooklyn, NY. The BQE Enhancement project is a joint effort between the City and your community to improve the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) and Hicks Street, between Atlantic and Hamilton Avenues.
Design alternatives will be focused on mitigating noise and air quality issues associated with the BQE, and on enhancing connections among communities on both sides of this barrier. Solutions will look at traffic calming and pedestrian and bicycle pathway improvements at the edges of the BQE, green planted buffers, additional walkways, and other sustainable initiatives.
If you are interested in joining this workshop, please send an email to BQE@nycedc.com. This is an NYCEDC-led project, in collaboration with Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and NYCDOT.
