Columbia Waterfront District Tree Lighting Draws a Big Crowd

Over 200 people gathered to celebrate the Holiday Season at the 5th Annual Columbia Waterfront Tree Lighting Ceremony held at the Human Compass Garden on December 9th, 2011. This year’s tree lighting ceremony was jointly sponsored by Carroll Gardens Association, Inc., the Columbia Waterfront District Merchants Association, Apple Bank, the Red Hook Star-Revue, and the House of Pizza & Calzone.  Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez and State Senator Daniel Squadron gave their holiday greetings and urged community residents to patronize local businesses. Representatives from other elected officials were also present during the event. More than 100 children waited anxiously for Santa to arrive, while the Less Magnetic Band entertained the crowd with their Holiday Jazz repertoire. After some delay, Santa finally made his appearance in a fire truck, welcomed by the adulation of screaming little voices. The evening was capped with Santa and his helpers handing out toys to happy little youngsters.

Carroll Gardens Association, Inc. would like to thank the event sponsors, our elected officials, donors, the Columbia Street Merchants, volunteers, and the CGA staff who tirelessly organized the event.
